In 1916, the US began forcing Mexicans that crossed the border to bathe in a mix of kerosene and vinegar. A US immigration officer talks to Mexicans in El Paso, Texas, 1916. El Paso was considered to have the ideal dry, warm climate to combat tuberculosis, and so, multiple sanatoriums were built in the city. In total, the government is thought to have bathed 127,123 Mexicans at the bridge between Juárez and El Paso.

In some hospitals, patients arriving in cardiac arrest are not resuscitated, because medical staff choose to work on patients with a greater chance of survival instead. On top of all those challenges, the hospitals have become temporary orphanages, too, according to the medical workers. The medical staff have cared for some of the children until a relative can come to take them. Doctors in two hospitals in Gaza said that, with nothing to power air-conditioners, the heat has gotten bad enough that it is making patients’ wounds fester. Medical staff need their diminishing fuel stocks to light up operating rooms instead.

When the Veralto spinoff from Danaher was completed earlier this month, shareholders like us received one VLTO share for every three shares of DHR owned. Recall that in Danaher's earnings report, third-quarter results for the Environmental & Applied Solutions outpaced expectations for both sales and operating income. On Thursday's call, CFO Sameer Ralhan said Veralto implemented some cost optimizations in the third quarter that will start delivering benefits in the ongoing fourth quarter. Other notable dynamics in Veralto's third quarter include free cash flow generation coming in at 113% of GAAP earnings (which was higher than adjusted earnings at 83 cents per share). Finally, Veralto expects to initiate a quarterly dividend of 9 cents per share in the fourth quarter.

Those potential returns can come from two places: Danaher stock and shares of Veralto (VLTO), the soon-to-be-standalone company that's in the business of water quality. When we receive Veralto shares on Monday, as all Danaher shareholders will, we intend to keep them, based on their current expected value. A "when-issued" market was established Wednesday for both Danaher and Veralto stock, providing a first look at how investors are valuing the companies on their own. Investors will receive one share in Veralto for every three shares of Danaher they own. The caveat is that spin-off debuts can see substantial volatility, and if Veralto shares were to receive a big pop, our discipline may require us to capitalize on that and take profits.

Should you scrape your tongue?

Tongue scrapers are metal or plastic devices used to clean the surface of the tongue. Tongue scraping can help when “you have a lot of bacteria and film on your tongue,” Kosdon said. A few medical studies support the use of tongue scraping for getting rid of tongue bacteria and bad breath, but the studies were mostly small and didn’t show strong results. The few clinical trials available found a slightly greater benefit in using tongue scrapers for tongue cleaning than toothbrushing, but these effects were temporary. Consider starting in the middle rather than trying to stick the tongue scraper all the way to the back of the tongue.

An Estonian filmmaker sent Ukrainian soldiers saunas to the front lines, the BBC reported. The saunas are camouflaged and come equipped with showers and washing machines. A Ukrainian commander told the BBC he's grateful for the saunas after grueling days in the trenches. They are camouflaged to protect Ukrainians from Russian fire and also come with showers and washing machines so that soldiers can clean their military uniforms after weeks in the trenches. Estonia has a longstanding sauna culture, with its own military troops taking mobile saunas on recent missions in the Afghan desert and Lebanon.

Veralto will consist of two primary divisions – water quality and product quality & innovation – which generated nearly $5 billion in combined sales in 2022 under the Danaher roof. The water quality unit contributed about 60% of that figure. Bottom line We expect to stay invested in both Danaher and Veralto once the spin-off is completed and the tax-free share distribution occurs on Sept. 30. Out of more than 100 Vibrio species, about 12 — the most common in the US being Vibrio vulnificus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio alginolyticus — can cause a human illness known as vibriosis. Vibrio vulnificus is the species that can cause flesh-eating infections, known as necrotizing fasciitis. Vibrio bacteria can enter through even minor wounds, including cuts, scrapes, scratches, recent piercings, new tattoos or surgical incisions. Even though the risk of a Vibrio vulnificus infection is low, if contracted the effects can be severe. Around 1 in 5 people infected with Vibrio vulnificus die, sometimes within a day or two of getting sick.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced recently that employees would be expected to return to the office three days a week in the spring. In less than a week, 14,000 employees had joined the Slack channel and a petition started circulating, demanding the company retract the policy. General Motors, Starbucks, Apple and Twitter are among other big companies that have started calling employees back to the office. Employees resist RTO mandatesEmployers are doing their best to really sell RTO, marketing it to employees using words like collaboration, socialization and free snacks. Employees are a lot happier if they work from home one or two days a week so that boosts recruitment and retention.
Conveyor belt sushi restaurants have been an affordable option across Japan for decades. The prank videos, often perpetrated by younger culprits, show customers at any one of Japan's many conveyor belt sushi restaurants taking things off the belt like utensils, soy sauce bottles, or food. He later licks a finger then at least one plate of sushi on the conveyor belt. The videos have prompted sushi restaurants to remind customers that they frequently clean and disinfect utensils, and will provide clean utensils upon request. "Kaiten-zushi," or conveyor belt sushi, restaurants have been a mainstay in Japan for decades as an affordable option.
More than 40 million egg-laying hens have been culled in the U.S. alone, causing the price of eggs nationwide to skyrocket, Lorenzoni said. Months earlier, the “bird flu” outbreak drove the cost of turkey meat to record highs. Poultry can become infected through direct exposure to wild birds but more likely from fecal matter that contaminates the ground around farms or yards. Many migrating birds are not sickened by bird flu, which means it’s not well understood just how widespread it is in the wild, Lorenzoni added. The sun can, for instance, naturally disinfect surfaces while gloomier days help viral particles survive on surfaces contaminated by infected bird poop, Lorenzoni said.
Last week, local governments across China began to convene for annual legislative sessions laying out their respective policy goals for the year. Economists estimated the entire year’s deficit could hit a record 10 trillion yuan ($1.4 trillion) in 2022. Beijing, the nation’s capital, said Sunday that it had spent nearly 30 billion yuan ($4.5 billion) last year on preventing and controlling Covid. The city didn’t reveal its 2021 Covid spending. During the past three years, the bills amounted to 30.5 billion yuan ($4.6 billion.)

REUTERS/Eldson ChagaraBLANTYRE, Malawi, Jan 2 (Reuters) - Malawi has delayed the opening of public schools in the southern African country's two major cities of Blantyre and Lilongwe, the health minister said Monday, to try to slow down a surge in cholera deaths. Cholera is an annual problem during Malawi's rainy months from November to March, where the number of deaths is around 100 a year. The global stockpile of cholera vaccines the World Health Organization helps manage is "currently empty or extremely low", a WHO official said last month amid a resurgence of the disease. Chiponda called on authorities to tighten control measures, including spraying chlorine to disinfect congested places such as markets and schools and stepping up inoculations.

Epidemic control workers in Beijing go to disinfect an epidemic area in a recently reopened neighborhood after China lifted its policies such as locking down areas and cities. The death of a Chinese medical student who had been doing hospital work shook healthcare workers across the country and stirred fears of inundated hospitals as the scrapping of Beijing’s strict Covid-19 restrictions has triggered a surge in infections. The West China School of Medicine in the southwestern city of Chengdu said that the first-year medical student, whom it referred to by his surname, Chen, collapsed on Tuesday after completing his clinical work. It said he died of cardiac arrest a little after 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Covid control workers disinfect an area in Beijing on Monday, Nov. 28, 2022, where a day earlier locals had gathered to protest stringent Covid measures. BEIJING — Mainland China reported the first decline in daily Covid infections in more than a week on Monday. Local infections fell in Guangdong and Chongqing, two of the hardest-hit regions in the latest Covid wave. But the capital city of Beijing saw infections rise Monday from a day earlier, as did Shanghai, albeit at a far smaller scale. Over the weekend, students and groups of people across China held public demonstrations to protest the country's stringent zero-Covid policy.
CHICAGO, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Cooks may have to put away their oversized platters for serving turkey this Thanksgiving. If a farm has an outbreak, producers must disinfect their barns after culling turkeys and wait about six months before restocking. The National Turkey Federation acknowledged that cooks in some geographic areas could see limited supplies of big turkeys. On the U.S. East Coast, Baldor sees a shortage of the bigger sizes as large Thanksgiving celebrations make a comeback, Lindgren said. Shoppers are resuming traditional purchases of turkeys around 18 pounds, after downsizing their birds for smaller gatherings over the last two years, he said.
In the years before the Covid-19 pandemic, hospitalization rates for seniors were about 10 times lower at this point in the season. Based on best estimates, there are between 10,000 and 15,000 adult deaths in the United States from RSV each year and around 150,000 hospitalizations for RSV, Falsey said. Adults with weakened immune systems need to be careful in RSV season. Doctors’ offices have swab tests that can determine whether an illness is flu, RSV or Covid. Protective measures for this busy RSV season will sound familiar: Wash your hands frequently, disinfect surfaces, and wear a mask in crowded spaces.
HONG KONG — At least 27 people were killed when a bus in southwest China crashed while transporting them to a Covid-19 quarantine facility, local authorities said, drawing outrage from a public growing weary with the country’s strict “zero-Covid” policies. Future Publishing via Getty Images file“Actually, 1.4 billion people are all on this same bus, the bus of Covid prevention and control,” one comment read, referring to China’s total population. It was unclear whether those on the bus had Covid-19, or were there because cases had been detected among their close contacts or neighbors.
CNN —A top Chinese health official has warned people against touching foreigners, a day after mainland China confirmed its first case of monkeypox. Cases of monkeypox, which causes flu-like symptoms and blister-like lesions, began emerging around the world in May. “It’s good to open the country’s door, but we can’t just let everything in,” one Weibo user wrote. “We are willing to buy car insurance in case of accidents, but we will not refuse to drive,” one person wrote. “We will wear face masks to prevent catching Covid, but we will not refuse to go outside.”Another user, responding to Wu’s guidance, was more blunt: “After how the Covid-19 pandemic was handled, can you still trust him?”
